It is a relief for passengers arriving in the country as President William Ruto’s government has announced increasing the duty-free threshold from the current KSh 50,000 to KSh 250,000.

This implies passengers bringing in goods for personal use valued up to KSh 250,000 will no longer be required to pay customs duties.

The rise comes after several travelers complained about their goods, which had exceeded the threshold, being seized at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) and other international airports.

The new development was announced in a joint statement by Cabinet Secretaries of Roads and Transport, National Treasury and Economic Planning, Interior and National Administration, and Tourism and Wildlife.

“In a bid to streamline passenger goods screening, Kenya has raised the duty-free threshold for passengers from KSh 50,000 to KSh 250,000,” read the statement in part.

Further, the Cabinet secretaries announced the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) will enhance staff capacity through training to further strengthen customs operations.

Also, all airport customs officers will be equipped with body-worn cameras effective July 1, 2025, to ensure transparency and efficiency.
