President William Ruto’s recent three-day tour of the Mt. Kenya region was a strategic move aimed at reinforcing political unity and focusing on development amidst growing tensions.
The visit came at a critical time as the region grapples with internal disputes and political realignments.
During the tour, Ruto emphasized the necessity for Mt. Kenya leaders to align with the government’s development agenda.
He urged them to set aside internal divisions and support the administration’s broad-based government.
“This government is committed to fulfilling its promises across Mt. Kenya, and we need the support of our leaders to achieve these goals,” Ruto stated.

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua echoed Ruto’s call for cohesion, underscoring the importance of staying united.
His remarks were pointed: “As Mt. Kenya, this is our government. I’ve heard some leaders from the region say they cannot leave the government. But where are we supposed to go if we leave the government?” Gachagua said.
Gachagua further advised leaders to confine any divisive discussions to informal settings like WhatsApp groups.
“Keep any divisive discussions confined to informal settings,” he urged, reflecting a strategic approach to prevent public debates from escalating into conflicts. This advice aims to ensure that internal disagreements do not detract from the government’s objectives and regional stability.
The backdrop of Gachagua’s comments is the ongoing political realignments within Mt. Kenya, where debates over succession and impeachment are threatening to fracture the region’s political unity.
Political analysts emphasize the importance of unity for Mt. Kenya’s influence and development.

Edwin Mucheke, a political analyst, notes, “The unity of Mt. Kenya is essential not only for local development but also for maintaining influence within the national government. Divisive debates weaken the region’s ability to present a unified stance, which is crucial for negotiating and advancing development goals.”
Similarly, Prof. Mwangi Njoroge warns of the dangers of public disputes, stating, “Internal conflicts and public disagreements can undermine the region’s bargaining power and distract from its development priorities. By focusing on unity, Mt. Kenya leaders can better support the administration’s initiatives and ensure that the region remains an integral part of the national agenda.”
