National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has called for greater unity among leaders and residents of Western Kenya to advance the region’s political and economic interests.

Wetang’ula made the remarks on Sunday during a service at St Kizito Primary School grounds in Port Victoria, Budalang’i, where he had been invited by area MP Raphael Wanjala.

Following the service, Wetang’ula joined leaders, including President William Ruto’s aide Farouk Kibet, Webuye East MP Martin Wanyonyi and Likuyani MP Innocent Mugabe, in a fundraiser supporting the construction of St Kizito Lunyofu Catholic Church.

He urged residents to work together, saying the region could benefit from unity and strategic engagement on development matters.

Wetang’ula also called on supporters of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga to consider his cooperation with President Ruto before his death and the political direction he had taken.

He highlighted development projects in Busia, including the Busia County Teaching and Referral Hospital Surgical Ward, Alupe University Academic Block and Library, Mulukhoba Fish Landing Site and Busia-Nasewa Special Economic Zone.

He pledged to work with Wanjala and other leaders to pursue completion of stalled roads, improve border infrastructure and strengthen cross-border trade with Uganda.

Wetang’ula said Busia’s border trade should create more jobs, expand businesses and increase economic opportunities for local residents.
