Speaker Moses Wetang’ula visits ailing Kwanza MP Ferdinand Wanyonyi

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has visited Kwanza Constituency Member of Parliament Ferdinand Wanyonyi in India, where the legislator is undergoing specialised medical treatment.

In a statement shared on X on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, Wetang’ula said Wanyonyi is recuperating after being flown to India late in 2025 for advanced medical care.

“I visited Kwanza Constituency MP Ferdinand Wanyonyi at KIMS Health Care Management Limited in Kerala, India, where he is undergoing specialised treatment. I was encouraged by the progress he has made and remain optimistic about his recovery,” Wetang’ula said.

The Speaker noted that the MP’s medical team had given a positive update on his condition. According to Wetang’ula, doctors at KIMS Health Care Management Limited confirmed that Wanyonyi is responding well to treatment and rehabilitation.

The medical team, led by Dr Nitha J, a Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Consultant, briefed me on his condition and confirmed that he is responding well to treatment and rehabilitation under close medical supervision. I was reassured that he is receiving comprehensive, multidisciplinary care and that his condition has stabilised, he said.

Wetang’ula’s visit follows his earlier intervention to dismiss reports claiming that the Kwanza lawmaker had died. While addressing the National Assembly on Thursday, December 4, 2025, the Speaker clarified that Wanyonyi had been unwell and was transferred to India after receiving treatment at Nairobi Hospital for about a month.

I want to inform the House that the Hon. Ferdinand Wanyonyi, the Member for Kwanza, is unwell. He was in Nairobi Hospital for about a month, and the doctors recommended that we take him to India, Wetang’ula told MPs at the time.

He also revealed that he had spoken directly with Wanyonyi through a conference call and that the Clerk of the National Assembly had similarly communicated with the legislator, confirming his condition.

The Speaker condemned the spread of false reports about Wanyonyi’s health, describing those responsible as malicious rumourmongers seeking to cause unnecessary alarm among constituents.

Wanyonyi, a veteran legislator known for his calm demeanor and consistent contributions in Parliament, has been absent from public engagements in recent weeks due to his illness, which had fuelled speculation about his condition.
