Wanini Kireri Prison Hospital Launches Outpatient Services in Kiambu

A newly completed Wanini Kireri Magereza Level IV Hospital has begun its outpatient services, marking the beginning of the 150-bed capacity hospital, which will serve prison officers, inmates, and the surrounding populations.

Located within the Prisons Staff Training College, the hospital is being launched in phases as the government works to fully equip the facility before officially launching the hospital.

This follows a directive from President William Ruto, who last week ordered the hospital to become operational within the next two weeks during a pass-out parade for newly recruited prison officers.

Built by the Kenya Defence Forces, the facility already boasts essential medical departments, including a pharmacy, male and female departments, a modern lab, as well as physiotherapy departments.

Once fully operational, the hospital will offer a wide range of medical services, including outpatient, inpatient, emergency, lab, maternal, child, communicable, and non-communicable diseases.

Speaking during the launch of the outpatient services, Ouma Oluga stated that the hospital is meant to improve access to medical care for correctional officers working within correctional facilities as well as inmates.

He stated that the initiative is part of the government’s efforts to improve access to health care under the Universal Health Coverage as well as the current health financing reforms through the Social Health Authority.

He called upon the medical staff posted to the hospital to ensure the highest level of professional conduct as they deliver quality care to the patients.

The Ministry of Health will continue to work with health facilities across the country, including training, technical, as well as quality assurance, to improve the quality of care within the institutions.

Some of the guests present during the event included Salome Beacco, Andrew Toro, George Waganga, Patrick Aranduh, Angus Masoro, as well as officials from the Ministry of Health, Interior, as well as the Kenya Prisons Service.
