Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K) leader Eugene Wamalwa has intensified calls for an independent and formal inquest into the death of former Lugari MP and businessman Cyrus Jirongo, citing contradictory statements from government security agencies that have raised public suspicion.
Speaking on Tuesday, December 30, 2025, during Jirongo’s burial ceremony in Lumakanda, Kakamega County, Wamalwa accused the government of issuing conflicting accounts regarding the fatal road accident that claimed the former legislator’s life.
The former Defence Cabinet Secretary questioned the credibility of official investigations, arguing that senior security agencies appeared to be operating at cross purposes.
“In a situation like this where we have conflicting statements from the same government, the buck stops with the President,” Wamalwa said, expressing concern over what he described as confusion within the country’s security apparatus.
Wamalwa pointed to remarks by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Director Mohamed Amin, who reportedly stated that investigators had traced a Probox vehicle alleged to have been following Jirongo at a petrol station and concluded that no foul play was involved.
However, he noted that a day later, Deputy Inspector General of Police Gilbert Masengeli issued a contradictory statement while addressing mourners at Jirongo’s home in Kitale, saying fresh forensic investigations were yet to be conducted.
“Tumesikia DCI akisema wamechunguza na waka-rule out foul play. Lakini jana, DIG Masengeli anatuambia sasa ndio wanaanza uchunguzi wa forensic. Which is which? What kind of government is this where the left hand does not know what the right hand is doing?” Wamalwa posed.
He argued that the inconsistency had only deepened doubts among Kenyans, particularly leaders and residents from the Western region, who are demanding transparency and accountability over the circumstances surrounding Jirongo’s death.
Wamalwa insisted that only an independent and credible inquest, conducted outside state security agencies, could restore public confidence and offer closure to the family.
“Hii mambo lazima ijibiwe na serikali. Lakini kwa sababu inaonekana hawajielewi, tunasema lazima kuwe na independent and formal inquest ili ukweli ujulikane,” he added.
Khaniri Raises Fresh Concerns
Former Vihiga Senator George Khaniri also echoed the calls for a thorough forensic investigation, saying there were still glaring gaps in the official narrative.
