Former Lugari Member of Parliament Cyrus Jirongo was laid to rest at his farm in Lumakanda, Trans Nzoia County, during a ceremony attended by family members, friends, and political leaders from across the country.
Jirongo was eulogised as a firm and visionary leader who mentored many Kenyans in both politics and business. Speakers described him as influential, courageous, and deeply committed to public service and community development.
In a statement read by Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, President William Ruto mourned Jirongo as a close friend and a bold leader who played a significant role in Kenya’s political landscape.
Several leaders who addressed mourners called on the government to urgently investigate the circumstances surrounding Jirongo’s death to dispel any public suspicion. They also urged authorities to ensure that the late politician’s property is protected for the benefit of his family.
The burial ceremony also became a platform for broader political discussions, including calls for unity among the Luhya community and debates around the future of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).
Leaders insisted that Western Kenya should produce a presidential candidate in the 2027 General Election.
ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna reaffirmed his commitment to the party but used the occasion to defend former President Uhuru Kenyatta against claims that he influenced the outcome of ODM leader Raila Odinga’s presidential bid in the last election. Sifuna also called on the government to implement the National Dialogue Committee (NADCO) report as agreed with the late former Prime Minister before entering into any new political arrangements with ODM.
Cyrus Jirongo is survived by three widows, several children, and grandchildren.
