Family, friends, and colleagues gathered at CITAM Church in Karen on Wednesday to mourn former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairman Wafula Chebukati in a heartfelt memorial service.

Chebukati’s son, Emmanuel, delivered the eulogy, revealing that his father had plans to pursue a PhD before his illness. His wife, Mary, remembered him as a loving and devoted spouse, while his children—two sons and a daughter—paid tribute to his unwavering dedication to family.

“He was fully present in our lives. Every Christmas, he made it a tradition to take us on holiday. Family was his anchor,” they shared.

Chebukati, who led the IEBC from 2017 to 2023, passed away on February 20 at Nairobi Hospital. The 63-year-old had been battling brain cancer since April 2023 and succumbed to cardiac arrest after spending nearly a week in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

He will be laid to rest on March 8 at his Kitale farm, with another funeral service scheduled for Friday in his rural home.

During a press briefing on February 24, family spokesperson Eric Nyongesa disclosed that Chebukati was diagnosed with brain cancer just months after leaving office, marking the beginning of his courageous health battle
