The Kenya Veterinary Paraprofessional Association (KVPA) has expressed full support for the upcoming nationwide livestock vaccination campaign, scheduled to begin in January 2025.

The association reassured farmers that the vaccines are both safe and effective.

KVPA Chairman John Ngigi emphasized that vaccination is crucial in preventing and controlling livestock diseases, benefiting both animals and humans alike.

He pointed out that diseases such as Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) and Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR) have led to the loss of valuable markets and have hindered trade in Kenya.

Ngigi further explained that the vaccination campaign aims to establish disease-free zones, which will enhance both local and international livestock trade.

The vaccination will be provided free of charge and will target specific areas, including Arid and Semi-arid Lands (ASALs) for PPR, and the Dairy Belt for FMD.

“Veterinary practitioners, both public and private, will be involved in administering vaccines in all targeted areas. For PPR, the focus will be on ASALs, while FMD will be targeted initially in the Dairy Belt,” said Ngigi.

KVPA has collaborated with key partners such as the Kenya Veterinary Vaccines Production Institute (KEVEVAPI) and the Directorate of Veterinary Services (DVS) to ensure the vaccines are safe and readily available. All vaccines will be locally produced, with no imports planned.

“KEVEVAPI’s Managing Director, Alex Sabuni, has assured us of the Institute’s ability to produce enough vaccines for both PPR and FMD during the campaign period. He also confirmed that there will be no foreign vaccine imports,” added Ngigi.

In addition, the KVPA plans to launch a nationwide awareness campaign in January 2025 to educate farmers and local communities about the vaccination process.
