The United States of America has condemned the violence meted on the anti-femicide demonstrators in Nairobi on Tuesday, December 10.
The largely peaceful demonstrations were reportedly disrupted by the National Police Service (NPS) members, who teargassed the participants and arrested others.
Through its Embassy in Kenya, the US government accused the Kenyan police of contravening the 2010 Constitution, which gives a right to peaceful demonstrations.
In a statement, the embassy’s chief of mission Marc Dillard described the police brutality as regrettable and concerning.
"Regrettable and concerning to see police action against Kenyans exercising their constitutional rights to assemble and protest peacefully. On #InternationalHumanRightsDay and every day, the United States supports efforts to #EndFemicideKE and protect the human rights of all people," the embassy stated.
