African streaming platform Showmax will be discontinued in the near future after its board approved plans to close the service.
In a notice sent to subscribers, the company said the decision followed a “comprehensive review” of the platform as it evaluates its wider digital strategy and long-term sustainability. However, the company did not disclose the specific reasons behind the planned shutdown.
For now, the service will continue operating normally. Subscribers can still stream content on the platform while the company prepares further details about the transition and eventual closure.
Showmax has been a key part of the digital expansion of its parent company, MultiChoice, which has been competing with global streaming platforms such as Netflix and Amazon Prime Video.
The announcement comes at a time when major ownership changes are taking place at MultiChoice. French media group Canal+ recently moved to acquire the company, a development expected to influence its future content and streaming strategy across Africa.
Over the years, Showmax built a strong presence in several African countries, including Kenya. The platform introduced Showmax Select and Showmax Premium in the country in October 2016 and later tailored its services to local audiences.
To make subscriptions easier, Showmax integrated payments through M-Pesa and partnered with telecom providers such as Safaricom and Airtel. Mobile plans were priced from KSh 300 per month, making the service accessible to many internet users.
