Diana Chepkemoi, the World Under-20 3000m steeplechase bronze medalist, has set her sights on breaking the women’s 3000m steeplechase world record this year.

The 17-year-old athlete is focused on rigorous training to turn this ambitious goal into reality.

“I’m heading back to training to prepare for the upcoming track and field season. My aim is to break the world record for the women’s 3000m steeplechase this season,” Chepkemoi stated.

Beatrice Chepkoech, a fellow Kenyan, currently holds the world record for the event, having clocked 8:44.32 at the 2018 Monaco Diamond League.

Chepkemoi, however, announced her arrival on the global stage last year, securing a bronze medal at the World Under-20 Championships in Lima, Peru, with a time of 9:29.84.

Chepkemoi began 2025 with a strong performance, finishing third in the Under-20 women’s 6km race at the final leg of the Athletics Kenya (AK) Cross Country Series held at Cardinal Otunga High School in Kisii.

She clocked 20:07.7, behind winner Joyline Chepkemoi (19:54.1) and second-place finisher Cynthia Chepkurui (19:54.2).

Reflecting on her result, Chepkemoi sees it as the ideal foundation to build a successful season.

Her next target is the Sirikwa Classic World Cross Country Tour in Eldoret, where she is aiming for victory.

The national cross-country championships are scheduled for February 8.
