More than 100,000 Kenya Institute of Management (KIM) graduates and about 10,000 current students are in uncertainty after TVET (Technical and Vocational Education and Training) Authority (TVETA) ordered immediate closure of the institution’s TVET programmes.

The government directive has even caused distress those wirh the diploma and certificate programmes offered under the TVET framework.

In addition, people are worrying whether qualifications issued since 2018 will be recognized or not.

A day after the government notice was issued, a spot check at KIM’s Nairobi campus revealed that there was little activity with empty classrooms, no students and no students in the library.

KIM Executive Director, Dr. Muriithi Ndegwa, explained that the situation was like a disaster and that the directive might have long-term effects not only on the current learners but also on the graduates who are already out there with their qualifications.

According to institution, since 2018, there have been a total of over 100,000 graduates from its TVET programmes while almost 10,000 are the current students enrolled.

Nevertheless, the management has indicated that the closure will only affect diploma and certificate TVET programmes and as such other institutional operations will still continue.

KIM further disclosed that it has been in consultation or negotiations with the regulators as a way to find the solution to this impasse.
