The United Kingdom and Kenya have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening security cooperation following a meeting between British High Commissioner to Kenya His Excellency Matt Baugh OBE and Inspector General of the National Police Service (IG-NPS) Douglas Kanja.
The High Commissioner paid a courtesy call on IG Kanja at his office in Jogoo House ‘A’, where discussions focused on areas of mutual interest and collaboration between the UK Government and the National Police Service.
During the meeting, Mr. Baugh highlighted key initiatives that have continued to strengthen the longstanding partnership between Kenya and the United Kingdom. He expressed the UK’s commitment to maintaining regular engagements and exchanges to further deepen the historical ties between the two nations.
IG Kanja appreciated the strong and productive relationship between Kenya and the UK, noting that the partnership has continued to deliver positive outcomes, particularly in enhancing the capacity and effectiveness of the National Police Service.
The Inspector General emphasised the importance of global police cooperation in addressing emerging security threats, noting that modern crimes and criminal networks operate beyond national borders.
He identified terrorism, narcotics trafficking, human trafficking, money laundering, child sexual exploitation, cybercrime, pornography and paedophilia among the transnational crimes requiring enhanced international collaboration.
IG Kanja also acknowledged the continued support from the UK Government to the National Police Service, particularly in the areas of training and capacity building.
Both sides agreed to explore additional opportunities for cooperation aimed at strengthening law enforcement capabilities and improving security outcomes for citizens of Kenya and the United Kingdom.
The British High Commissioner was accompanied by Ms. Nerys Cross Smith, Political Counsellor at the British High Commission, and Ms. Makena Kirima, Policy Adviser on Security and Regional Affairs.
Also present during the meeting were Deputy Inspector General of the Administration Police Service Gilbert Masengeli, Director of Criminal Investigations Mohammed Amin, Principal Assistant to the Inspector General Mathew Kutoh, NPS Director of Training Hassan Aljir, and NPS Director of Corporate Communication and Spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga.
