Kenya is rolling out a new approach to malaria treatment aimed at improving patient outcomes and slowing the spread of drug resistance, Health Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni Muriuki has announced.
Speaking during a high-level meeting on strengthening research capacity for malaria elimination in Africa, Muriuki said the country is introducing Multiple First-Line Therapies (MFT) as part of a strategic shift in malaria case management.
“We are advancing evidence-based malaria case management through MFT, supported by strong surveillance systems and continuous operational research,” she said.
According to the PS, the MFT approach is designed to preserve the effectiveness of existing antimalarial drugs while enhancing long-term treatment outcomes through diversified treatment options.
Muriuki noted that Kenya is also investing in research and innovation, anchored in institutions such as the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI), to strengthen the country’s position as a regional leader in malaria research and policy innovation.
