Kiambu Senator Karungo wa Thang’wa is calling for the reduction of presidential term limits to four years instead of the proposal for extension.

The senator voiced strong opposition to a proposed amendment to the Kenyan Constitution that seeks to extend the presidential and parliamentary terms from five to seven years.

In response, Senator Karungo is advocating for an alternative amendment, proposing a reduction in term limits to four years for the President, Members of Parliament, Senators, Governors, and Members of County Assemblies.

He believes that the four years would enhance accountability and ensure a more dynamic and responsive political system.

He described the proposal to increase the limits as a threat to democratic accountability and urged citizens to engage in the debate.

The senator, addressing journalists and the public, argued that longer terms would undermine the core principles of democracy, making it harder for citizens to hold their leaders accountable.

He submitted a formal memorandum to the Senate’s Committee on Justice, Legal Affairs, and Human Rights (JLAHRC), outlining his objections.

“By adopting a four-year term limit, Kenya would align itself with global democratic practices that prioritize regular transitions in leadership, reinforcing our commitment to democracy,” said Karungo.

According to Karungo, extending the term limits would reduce the frequency of elections, diminishing opportunities for the public to evaluate their leaders’ performance.

“As you are aware, the current proposal that is before the Senate seeks to extend the presidential and parliamentary terms from five years to seven years. I firmly believe that this change poses significant risks to our democratic principles,” said Karungo

He further cautioned that longer terms could consolidate political power, making it more difficult for new leadership to emerge and weakening Kenya’s democratic fabric.

His objections for longer term he described the move as a disconnected from the interests of ordinary Kenyans.

He expressed concerns that extending the term could exacerbate political tensions, especially if citizens feel disenfranchised by leaders they cannot easily vote out.
