The 2025 Kenya National Chess Championship is set to break new ground with a game-changing announcement: two brand-new cars will be awarded to the winners of the Open and Ladies categories.

In a historic first, the Ladies Champion will receive a car — a major upgrade from previous editions, where only the Open section winner drove away with such a prize.

This move by the Chess Kenya Federation highlights its commitment to gender equity and affirmative action in sport.

The enhanced rewards not only raise the competitive stakes but also reinforce the Federation’s pledge to promote inclusivity and celebrate top talent equally.

This year’s championship promises intense competition, with the country’s best players vying not just for national titles, but for life-changing rewards.

Under the newly introduced Grand Prix format, only 11 elite and consistently active players — those who have excelled in at least four qualifying events — will qualify for a shot at the top honours.

The car importation process began in March, with the vehicles expected to arrive ahead of the highly anticipated event.
