The Technical University of Kenya (TUK) has dismissed a fake a viral statement claiming the institution would shut down for three months following its recent declaration of insolvency.

In a notice issued on Saturday, the university assured students, staff, and the public that operations remain uninterrupted.

“Treat this document circulated online as FAKE. The University has not been closed. Classes and normal operations are on,” the university stated.

The fake statement, attributed to Deputy Vice Chancellor Benedict Mutua, falsely claimed TUK would close from Monday, April 21, and remain shut for three months due to financial challenges.

The hoax followed a declaration by the Parliamentary Committee on Education and Administration on Thursday, which termed TUK insolvent over a Ksh12 billion debt dating back to 2013.

Appearing before the committee, DVC Mutua acknowledged the crisis, revealing that no TUK employee has received a full salary since the university was chartered. He blamed the salary issues on overstaffing and strained resources.

Despite the financial woes, the university emphasized it remains open and committed to serving its students.
