The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has postponed all the teacher promotion interviews that were earlier scheduled for Friday, October 18, following the declaration of a public holiday by the government in commemoration of the late Raila Odinga’s death.
In a statement issued on Thursday evening, the TSC announced that the interviews had been put on hold in respect of the day declared to be mourned for the late Prime Minister.
“Following the government’s announcement that Friday, October 18, 2025, was to be a public holiday to mark the passing of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, the Teachers Service Commission has rescheduled all the promotion interviews previously set for the day,” the release added.
The interviews will nonetheless take place from Tuesday, October 21, through to Thursday, October 23, the Commission added.
TSC further stated that its regional directors will issue new timetables and transportation arrangements to the affected candidates.
The cancelled interviews are a component of an enormous, on-going recruitment exercise by TSC to screen thousands of teachers across the country for numerous leadership and administrative roles.
The exercise started in August when TSC posted over 21,000 promotion vacancies, and the public was asked to apply from August 12 through August 25. By mid-September, the invited candidates started getting interview invitations.
Interviews for primary school teachers started earlier this month, starting October 6 at the sub-county level when over 47,000 teachers were invited for interview.
As that, the post-primary school teachers began their interviews this week starting October 13 with the interviews taking place at county offices.
In the meantime, Senior Principals and Curriculum Support Officers interviews have still been ongoing at the regional level.
Although the delay is inconsiderate to some of the teachers who have arranged travel and accommodation bookings, most have been understanding with the significance of the day for Kenya.
Raila Odinga, a colossus of Kenyan politics for over three decades, passed away early this week, and Kenyans throughout the country mourned his loss.
The government declared Friday as a holiday so that Kenyans could give their last respects to him.
TSC has assured the teachers that all the interviews will proceed as normally from next week and appreciated them for their comprehension and tolerance.
