Kenya is celebrating a powerful and history-making achievement after 22-year-old environmental advocate Truphena Muthoni shattered the Guinness World Record for the longest time spent hugging a tree—an astonishing 72 hours of nonstop endurance.

Beginning her challenge on December 8, Truphena went three full days without sleep or food, choosing to channel her strength into a peaceful statement about the urgent need to protect Kenya’s forests. Her new record surpasses her earlier 48-hour attempt, proving her unwavering dedication to environmental justice.

Far from being a mere stunt, Truphena described the marathon as a non-disruptive protest meant to touch people’s hearts without the chaos often associated with public demonstrations. She explained that tree hugging is both grounding and symbolic an act that reconnects humanity with nature while reminding the public about the cost of deforestation. Her message resonated deeply, drawing widespread support across the country.

The challenge received an inspiring boost from leaders and prominent figures. Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga officially launched the event, standing firmly behind the young activist. Renowned scholar PLO Lumumba made his way to Nyeri on the second day to encourage her in person, while former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua publicly commended her resilience.

As hours turned into days, Kenyans rallied behind Truphena online, on television, and in person. Crowds gathered near the Nyeri Governor’s office, offering emotional support, prayers, and cheers as she pushed through exhaustion.

And the country didn’t stop at moral support. Kenyans rewarded Truphena’s courage with heartfelt gifts, including a substantial cash reward, a premium smartphone, and a fully-paid holiday trip a fitting celebration for a young woman who gave her all for a cause bigger than herself.
