After being admitted for childbirth and minor surgery, three Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) candidates are taking their national examinations from hospital beds at Kiambu Level Five Hospital.
As per the hospital officials, among the three candidates two are girls who delivered healthy babies, and the boy child from Kirangari Boys High School had an operation on his appendix and is now recuperating.
Deputy Nurse Manager Isabel Wanjiku revealed that the three students are doing well and have been provided with a suitable environment to carry on with their exams. “We have made it possible for them to sit their papers under close supervision as per KNEC regulations,” she stated. Parents and hospital staff are also praising the students for their perseverance and willpower. “I really admire their bravery.
Though they are in different situations, they don’t lose sight of their education,” said Alice Wamuhu, a parent who also urged the community to support the girl that gave birth to twins.
The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has put in place measures that guarantee candidates in hospitals or those with special needs will not be disadvantaged. This allows hospitals like Kiambu Level Five to be used as temporary examination centers.
It is through the efforts of hospital management and education officers that the public has been informed of the students’ unhampered continuation of their papers as they recuperate.
