President William Ruto has appointed former Bumula MP Moses Wekesa Mabonga as the new chairperson of the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA), in the latest round of changes affecting state agencies.
The appointment was published in a Gazette Notice dated July 24, 2026, and takes effect immediately. Mabonga will serve a three-year term as the head of the board overseeing Kenya’s energy and petroleum regulator.
According to the Gazette Notice, President Ruto made the appointment under Section 12(1)(a) of the Energy Act, which grants the Head of State powers to appoint the board chairperson.
As board chair, Mabonga will be tasked with providing strategic leadership and governance at EPRA, an institution responsible for regulating the country’s electricity, petroleum and renewable energy sectors.
The changes at the authority also saw Energy Cabinet Secretary James Opiyo Wandayi appoint Faith Akiru Kuno as a member of the EPRA Board of Directors. Kuno will also serve a three-year term.
On the other hand, Wandayi revoked the appointment of Jennipher Nawoi Long’or as a board member immediately, creating room for the ongoing restructuring in the regulatory body.
The appointment is among several others made as part of the ongoing reshuffle in government bodies.
Through another Gazette Notice, President William Ruto has revoked the appointment of Thuo Mathenge as the Chairperson of the Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization (KALRO).
The appointments and revocation are in line with the ongoing government efforts to restructure the leadership of public bodies.
