Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi has described the merger between the Amani National Congress (ANC) and President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) as a strategic move to foster national unity.

Speaking during an interdenominational prayer session in Bungoma, Mudavadi called on Kenyans to support the new political arrangement, emphasizing its role in building cohesion.

“The merger is about uniting the nation,” said Mudavadi, who led ANC before joining the Kenya Kwanza government in 2022.

The merger was officially announced on Friday at State House, Nairobi, where Mudavadi and President Ruto were present.

UDA Chairperson Cecily Mbarire confirmed several key leadership changes following the merger. Lamu Governor Issa Timamy, who took over ANC’s leadership after Mudavadi’s departure, will now serve as one of UDA’s deputy party leaders, alongside Deputy President Kithure Kindiki.

Former ANC Chairperson Kelvin Lunani has been appointed UDA’s vice-chair, while ANC Secretary-General Omboko Milemba, also the MP for Emuhaya, will take on the role of deputy secretary-general in the newly consolidated party.

Mbarire praised Deputy President Kindiki for playing a key role in resolving challenges during the merger process.

“We are extremely happy as UDA that this process, which faced hurdles and delays, has finally come to completion,” she said.

The merger includes absorbing ANC’s structures and leadership into UDA, with plans to harmonize values, rebrand, and launch membership drives.

Mbarire assured Kenyans that all pre-merger agreements under the Kenya Kwanza Coalition have been upheld to ensure continuity.

“Our focus is on inclusivity, democracy, and building a strong political movement that transcends governments,” she said.

The newly consolidated UDA aims to strengthen its political footprint nationwide while fostering unity within the Kenya Kwanza Coalition.
