Three bodies have been found in the Indian Ocean off Tudor Creek, following a tragedy, a boat has overturned during the weekend ocean festival in Mombasa on Friday.

As the unfortunate racing boat, which was carrying 22 participants, went under its mid-race capsize, a large-scale rescue operation was launched. While 19 people were rescued, three individuals were reported missing. It has been stated that the dead bodies were retrieved in an all-master collaboration of different agencies’ search led by the Kenya Navy, thus, the incident was a multi-agency search operation.

Mombasa County Government has unveiled new maritime safety measures, which target preventing marine accidents. Governor Abdulswamad Nassir expounded that the next phase would concentrate on fortifying the policies and establishing the standards that would explicitly be the guidance for all maritime operations in the Indian Ocean.

“The safety of the people is the main thing. The new regulations that we are putting in place are aimed at ensuring that every maritime activity is carried out at the highest safety standards,” said Nassir

Moreover, he indicated that psychological support would be available to survivors and families of the victims. Besides that, a full investigation into the incident will be carried out by Kenya Coast Guard Service (KCGS) and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

The Governor also instructed that from now all the hotels and clubs on the beach or along the coast that want to organize large-scale events near or on the water must first get clearance from the County Security and Disaster Management teams.

The County has assured the public that despite the investigations into the cause of the tragedy, it is committed to strategies that enhance maritime safety.
