Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has sharply criticised former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua over his remarks that the 2027 General Election might replicate the violence witnessed during the 2007/2008 post-election chaos in Kenya.

Kindiki dismissed the notion that the country could slide back into such violence, emphasizing that Kenya has learned painful lessons from the past and will never return to that dark chapter.

In a statement, Kindiki implored that future elections should be contests of ideas rather than fear-mongering or divisive rhetoric.

He called on politicians to focus on transformative agendas instead of inciting unrest or acting out of personal vendettas.

"Kenya will never return to political violence. Not in 2027, not at any other time in future. Our country learnt hard and painful lessons from the 2007/2008 post-election violence. Never again.
Henceforth, Kenya’s leadership contests will revolve around who has better ideas to transform the country. The debate cannot be about the fear-mongering of desperate, vengeful, thoughtless and pretentious leaders," said Kindiki.

The 2007/2008 post-election violence resulted in over 1,500 deaths and the displacement of more than 600,000 people.
