Tanzanian Vice President Emmanuel Nchimbi has resigned from his position and announced his retirement from politics and public service.
Nchimbi said his resignation will take effect on September 4, 2026, in a letter addressed to President Samia Suluhu Hassan on Tuesday, August 25.
In the letter, Nchimbi said he had decided to leave public service under Article 50(2)(c) read together with Article 149(2) of the Constitution of Tanzania, which provide for the resignation of holders of constitutional offices.
“Today, August 25, 2026, I have written to the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Hon. Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan, to inform her of my decision to retire from politics and public service,” Nchimbi said.
He said he would formally leave the position of Vice President on September 4.
Nchimbi also suggested that his decision was linked to a desire by President Suluhu to make changes in the Office of the Vice President.
He recalled that when he took office, he had promised to serve the President and the country with integrity and to step aside if she wanted a different person in the position.
“On August 27, 2025, I pledged to Hon. President Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan that I would assist her and our country to the best of my ability and with integrity,” he said.
Nchimbi added that he had assured the President that he would leave office if she felt the need to have a different Vice President.
According to him, he is now sure that President Suluhu wants a change in the office, hence his resignation.
The Vice President thanked President Suluhu and the dominant Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) for giving him a chance to serve.
He thanked the Tanzanians for the support he has been receiving since he entered the service of the country and promised to continue serving his country as a citizen.
“I use this chance to thank all Tanzanians for the great cooperation I have been receiving ever since I was in the service of our country. I promise that I will continue being a good citizen of Tanzania,” he added.
Nchimbi’s resignation comes less than a year since he assumed the office of Vice Presidency in Tanzania after the general elections in 2025.
He is expected to vacate his office on September 4, and his era as the Vice President of Tanzania comes to an end.
