Normal operations have resumed at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport after the Kenya Aviation Workers Union (KAWU) signed a return-to-work formula, officially ending the air traffic control staff strike that had disrupted flights and passenger movement.
The breakthrough was reached during a mediation meeting convened by Davis Chirchir, the Cabinet Secretary for the Ministry of Transport, Kenya, with participation from the Ministry of Labour, Kenya, Kenya Airports Authority (KAA), Kenya Airports Workers Union, and the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA).
In a statement, Mohamud Gedi acting anaging Director KAA commended all parties for what it described as “constructive engagement” that paved the way for the swift restoration of airport operations.
"This resolution follows a successful mediation meeting led by the Cabinet Secretary for the Ministry of Transport, Mr. Davis Chirchir with participation from Ministry of Labour, Kenya Airports Authority (KAA), Kenya Airports Workers Union (KAWU), and Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA). With the strike now called off, flight activities at JKIA and other airports are gradually returning to normal. KAA has advised passengers to contact their respective airlines for updated flight schedules as services stabilize.
The authority reiterated its commitment to maintaining high safety standards and ensuring efficient airport operations nationwide.
