Air travel at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) was thrown into disarray this week after aviation workers went on strike, causing widespread flight delays and leaving hundreds of passengers stranded.

The industrial action, led by aviation unions, stems from a long-running labour dispute over salaries, working conditions, and delayed implementation of a collective bargaining agreement. As the strike continued, operations at Kenya’s busiest airport slowed significantly, affecting both domestic and international flights.

Kenya’s airline pilots have raised concerns that the disruptions could pose safety risks if the situation persists. The Kenya Airline Pilots Association (KALPA) warned that irregular schedules and prolonged delays may lead to crew fatigue and increased pressure on flight operations, factors that could compromise safety standards.

At the airport, travellers expressed frustration over long waits and limited information. Some passengers missed connecting flights, while others were forced to reschedule important trips. Airlines advised travellers to check flight statuses before heading to the airport as delays continued to ripple across the region.

Union leaders say the strike was triggered by unresolved negotiations and accuse authorities of failing to address workers’ concerns for years. Meanwhile, government officials have urged dialogue to resolve the standoff, noting that JKIA plays a crucial role as a regional aviation hub for East Africa.
