The National Heroes Council has officially opened a window to nominate individuals for recognition as national heroes, a move that has shown the country’s commitment to honoring those whose lives and actions have left an impact in the society.
In a notice issued under the Kenya Heroes Act, No 5 of 2014, the Council aims the exercise to identify and recognize persons who have made exceptional contributions to the country. It is mandates to identify, vet and recommend individuals for declaration as national heroes.
Its work culminates annually when the President formally recognizes new heroes during Mashujaa Day celebrations on October 20. In the past it has honored freedom fighters, athletes, artists and community leaders.
According to Jimmy Nuru Ondieki, Chairman of the National Heroes Council, nominations may be submitted by any member of the public or institutions.
They also noted nominees should demonstrate Article 10 of the Constitution of Kenya, which include national unity, patriotism, integrity and respect for human dignity.
The nominations are expected to highlight diverse fields, from technology innovators and climate activists to educators and cultural icons.
The Council has issued the nomination forms on their Council official website, with submissions to be made through multiple channels. The deadline of nominations has been set for July 1, 2026. The Council has stated successful nominations will be considered for recognition during Mashujaa Day.
