Kenya’s Tracy Ochoke was on Tuesday night named the Best Sports Journalist in the Young Reporters – Broadcasting category at the prestigious AIPS Sports Media Awards, held in Rabat, Morocco.
Her award-winning piece, “Stuck in Overtime”, aired on Africa Uncensored, spotlighted the prolonged and costly delay in the completion of Karatu Stadium.
The story captured the challenges faced by local athletes and communities due to the stalled project.
The award was presented jointly by AIPS Vice-President Hee Don Jung and IOC Vice-President Nawal El Moutawakkil, during a dazzling ceremony hosted at the elegant Palace Jawhara—a venue befitting the cultural vibrance of Rabat, often called the heart of Morocco.
In what was described as a “special Arabian night” and a “caravan of Moroccan dreams,” finalists from across the world gathered to celebrate excellence in sports journalism.
This year’s gala marked a milestone as the first time the awards ceremony was held in Africa since the inception of the AIPS Awards in 2018.
Journalists from every continent and working across various media platforms were represented.
Winners in the senior categories were awarded $8,000 (first prize), $3,000 (second prize), and $2,000 (third prize).
Meanwhile, Young Reporters like Ochoke received an AIPS Scholarship to cover a major international sporting event.
