National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has donated Sh2 million to Nzoia Sugar Football Club, a significant gesture aimed at helping the club address logistical challenges and successfully navigate the remainder of its season in the National Super League.
In a statement, Wetang’ula emphasized the critical role of sports in Kenya, both for maintaining physical health and nurturing the talents of young people.
“Sports is critical both for keeping our health in check as well as nurturing talent,” he said. The donation is intended to support the club’s operations and bolster its efforts to secure promotion to the Kenya Premier League.
As an ardent supporter of Nzoia Sugar FC, Wetang’ula personally urged the club’s chairman, Evans Kadenge, to maintain the team’s momentum through focused training and skill development.
Kadenge, who is the son of football legend Joe Kadenge, expressed his gratitude, calling the donation a vital boost for the club as it faces ongoing challenges.
“We appreciate your consistent support to this end. We assure you that we shall keep the fire on for the progress and prosperity of the club,” Kadenge committed.
The event also saw praise from local leaders, including Kanduyi MP John Makali and Bungoma Senator Wakoli Wafula, who attended the meeting with Kadenge.
Makali commended Kadenge’s leadership in guiding the team, while Wafula encouraged youth to embrace sports as a viable source of livelihood, in addition to their academic pursuits.
Wetang’ula urged leaders across the country to encourage young people to diversify their skills, especially by engaging in sports, for both economic and health benefits.
He reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting talent development in various fields, including football.
Founded in 1982, Nzoia Sugar FC is based in Bungoma County and has been a staple of local football, with ambitions of climbing into the top-tier Kenyan Premier League.
