The Kenya Simbas have unveiled their final 33-man squad for a month-long high-performance training camp in South Africa, in preparation for the 2027 Rugby World Cup qualifiers set for July in Uganda.
The announcement follows a training match against UAE Rugby on May 24 at RFUEA Grounds, which concluded a local training program that included a week-long camp in Kakamega.
Head coach Jerome Paarwater said the match allowed the technical team to assess all 47 players in camp before finalizing the squad.
“It gave us a chance to evaluate those who haven’t featured recently, and many stepped up. The next four weeks in South Africa will be key to sharpening our game before the Rugby Africa Cup,” he said.
Paarwater noted the team will face top-tier opposition including the SWD Eagles, Blue Bulls, and Sanlam Boland Cavaliers, ensuring tough tests before the qualifiers.
The squad features a mix of experience and youth, led by captain George Nyambua. Veterans like Samuel Asati, John Okoth, and Bethwel Anami return, alongside rising talents such as Samuel Ovwamu and Collins Indeche.
The South African-based duo of David Bunduki and Thomas Okeyo will join the team later in Limpopo, along with Hillary Mwanjilwa, who is recovering from injury.
Paarwater emphasized that players left out remain in contention. “Selection was tough. Those not picked are still in our plans based on form, fitness, and discipline.”
The team departs for South Africa later this week.
