The Social Health Authority (SHA) has issued a compliance notice to all employers nationwide, reminding them of their legal responsibilities under the Social Health Insurance Act 2023. Employers must register and enrol their employees in the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF) and remit contributions accordingly.
The directive applies universally to all employers, including those in the national government, county governments, and the private sector. According to Section 27(1) of the Act, all employers operating in Kenya are required to contribute to the fund regardless of their sector.
Employers must register their organizations through the SHA employer portal before enrolling employees. They are also required to update employees’ personal and dependent information to ensure accurate health coverage.
Contributions must be remitted monthly, no later than the 9th day of each month. Failure to comply incurs penalties of 2% of the unpaid amount for each period the contribution remains outstanding, in addition to the total annual contributions.
Non-compliance is a prosecutable offense. Employers who fail to remit contributions without valid justification face fines up to Ksh 2 million, imprisonment for up to three years, or both.
SHA urges all employers to comply fully to protect their employees and support a healthier, more resilient workforce.
