Ex Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s move to launch a new political party, Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), has sparked sharp criticism from prominent lawyer Ahmednasir Abdullahi, who has condemned what he terms “tribal madness” in Kenyan politics.
Ahmednasir’s statement questions the proliferation of ethnically based political parties, particularly those emerging from the Mt. Kenya region.
The lawyer warned against the balkanization of Kenya into smaller ethnic enclaves such as “Wamunyoro” groups.
"Don't we have even tribal parties? Don't we have enough Mt. Kenya parties? What is this tribal madness? Why are the tribal elites balkanizing Kenya into small WAMUNYORO enclaves?" said Ahmednasir.
Gachagua officially unveiled the DCP on May 15, 2025, after resigning from the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA.
The new party, with colors green, brown, and black, and a logo symbolizing “listening to the ground,” aims to represent the aspirations of the Mt. Kenya people while professing national inclusivity.
The launch of DCP is seen as a direct challenge to President William Ruto and his UDA party.
