Nyandarua County Senator John Methu has written to Senate Speaker Amason Kingi, urging him to call for a special sitting to address the recent wave of abductions.

In a statement released this morning, Methu, a close ally of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, revealed that he had requested the speaker to recall senators currently on recess to discuss the matter.

Methu emphasized that the situation cannot be overlooked, especially after the National Police Service and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) distanced themselves from the issue.

“I respectfully request your approval for a Special Sitting of the Senate to deliberate on a matter of critical national importance—The End of Forced Abductions and Disappearances of Young Government Critics. This issue has raised deep national concern, as it violates fundamental human rights and freedoms guaranteed in our Constitution, including the rights to freedom of expression, association, and life,” Methu’s statement read in part.

He also highlighted that recent admissions by the Kenya Police Service and the DCI that they are not responsible for the abductions have fueled fears of an organized criminal syndicate operating outside the authority of the Inspector General. According to Methu, this syndicate appears to target and silence critics of the current administration.

Justifying the need for a special sitting, Methu argued that the input of senators could lead to actionable recommendations to end the abductions.

“Speaker, this House must take the necessary steps to demand immediate government action to halt these illegal and unconstitutional practices. Given the urgency and seriousness of this matter, I request you to convene this Special Sitting to debate and adopt recommendations that will protect the rights and freedoms of all Kenyans,” he added.

Methu’s call comes after the recent release of four young men who had been abducted by suspected police officers. Peter Muteti, Billy Mwangi, Bernard Kavuli, and Rony Kiplangat had been missing for over two weeks.
