Detectives have arrested more than 170 individuals in connection with widespread destruction and unrest during the Saba Saba Day protests across parts of Nairobi, Central, and Eastern regions.
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), operations are ongoing to apprehend additional suspects involved in looting and vandalism of both public and private property.
The Central region experienced the worst of the chaos, where protests turned violent and led to significant damage to businesses.
In Embu, Manyatta MP Gitonga Mukunji was arrested alongside Stanley Mbuthia, a bodaboda rider, and James Mbochi, a journalist.
All three were arraigned at Kahawa Law Courts. The MP is also facing additional charges of allegedly inciting violence during the June 25, 2025 protests.
In Meru, 50 suspects were arrested in connection with arson and robbery after Magunas Supermarket was set ablaze.
In Machakos, 66 people were taken into custody after being linked to the burning of a gas tanker along Kitui Road.

“About 10 other individuals captured on video participating in the crimes are still being pursued,” the DCI said in a statement.
Widespread vandalism and looting were reported across the Central region. In Mwea town, 21 suspects were arraigned in court for their alleged involvement in the looting of Nice City Supermarket. Police were granted custodial orders to continue investigations.
In Kerugoya, six suspects were arrested over theft and destruction at County Supermarket.
The supermarket’s Murang’a branch was also vandalized, leading to the arrest of two additional suspects.
“Forensic imaging and acoustic experts are currently analyzing CCTV footage that captured suspects vandalizing and stealing equipment from the Kerugoya CDF offices,” the DCI added. Eight suspects accused of torching the CCTV control room have been arrested.
In Nyandarua County, seven suspects were caught committing violent acts. Each was granted cash bail of Sh7 million by the court.
Nice Digital City in Mwea was looted and vandalised.
In Nairobi County, Quickmart, Powermart, and Magunas supermarkets in the Kasarani area were looted and vandalized. Eleven suspects have so far been arrested, with detectives pursuing more.
