President William Ruto has commenced a two-day State Visit to Tanzania, holding high-level bilateral talks with President Samia Suluhu Hassan at State House in Dar es Salaam. The meeting culminated in the signing of eight agreements aimed at deepening cooperation between the two East African nations.
In a two-day state engagement, the leaders sealed eight agreements focused on energy, agriculture, legal alignment, rail expansion, sea-based operations, and improving public service skills.
These deals aim to build stronger networks across borders and open up more room for regional progress and shared economic outcomes.
At the core of the discussions was a clear recognition that Tanzania stands as a vital ally in pushing forward common goals through sustained partnership efforts.
“President Samia and I have held productive and candid bilateral discussions during which we undertook a comprehensive review of our relations and reaffirmed our shared resolve to strengthen our strategic partnership for the benefit of our peoples.” said President Ruto
Both nations have seen their trade grow gradually, cross-border commerce hit $860. 3 million in 2025 – and they now agree to remove every remaining non-tariff hurdle by June 30, 2026.
This deadline follows guidance from the east African Community Summit, showing both governments are serious about opening markets without extra restrictions.
According to President Ruto, railway project Mainly draws interest as it could reshape transport flows across central regions.
A joint effort to modernize legal standards may also bring greater consistency when dealing with cross-national cases and disputes.
An investment and trade expo organized with the visit enabled private sector participants to discuss commerce opportunities, thus supporting economic collaboration.
“On tourism, we underscored its importance as a key driver of growth, foreign exchange earnings, and employment. We agreed to accelerate efforts to unlock its full potential and deepen people-to-people connections.”
In the energy sector, the heads of states reaffirmed the critical role of reliable, affordable, and clean energy in driving industrialisation, improving livelihoods, and strengthening regional competitiveness, and committed to deepen cooperation in this field.
Major Projects for Infrastructure and Connectivity
The heads of state praised the work done on the Malindi-Bagamoyo Highway that is a primary project and would significantly increase regional access and trade. Besides, they once more showed their willingness to bringing back the Voi-Taveta railway line that would have an important effect in lowering transport costs and enhancing the region’s economic competitiveness.
A mutual goal for deepening regional integration
On several occasions, the two presidents talked about their nations’ legacy of advancing Pan-Africanism and regional unity. They promised again that they would make East African Community a means for economic integration and shared prosperity.
Other main issues discussed were boundary reaffirmation with 564 kilometers of the common border already being demarcated. The two countries committed to complete the remaining work to meet the 2027 African Union deadline.
Security Emphasis and Global Cooperation
Furthermore, the two leaders touched on the regional security aspect and they laid stress on the necessity of maintaining peaceful and stable borders.
Besides, they highlited the importance of joint efforts in tackling global problems such as climate change and health emergencies while at the same time supporting the international order based on rules.
President Ruto thanked Tanzania for the kind hospitality extended during the visit and was assured that the visit would be beneficial in a tangible manner.
