President William Ruto has reassured the nation that the five Mandera chiefs abducted by suspected terrorists will be safely rescued, emphasizing the government’s commitment to combating criminal gangs and terror threats.

Speaking during his visit to Mandera, Ruto revealed that he had instructed Deputy Inspector General of Police Gilbert Masengeli to prioritize the chiefs’ release.

“Nimekuja na Masengeli hapa, na nishamweleza ya kwamba juu na chini, kulia na kushoto, mbele na nyuma, east or west mpaka haya mambo yatatuliwe,” Ruto said, affirming the government’s relentless pursuit of the abductors.

The President dismissed claims that the kidnapping was meant to intimidate him and deter his visit to the region.

“Hawa wajinga walikuwa wanafikiria ya kwamba wakifanya hivyo ati ndiyo nisikuje hapa. Ni wajinga sana, ni wazimu,” he stated, asserting his commitment to ensuring northern Kenya remains secure.

The five chiefs were reportedly ambushed in Elwak, Mandera, while traveling to a meeting to prepare for Ruto’s visit. Authorities believe they were taken across the border into Somalia, and negotiations through local elders are underway to secure their release.

Ruto reiterated that Kenya would not cede any part of its territory to criminals, vowing decisive action against those threatening national security.

“We will go after them, we will deal with them, and we will eliminate them,” he said.

The President, accompanied by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki and several Cabinet Secretaries, is also set to tour Garissa and Wajir. During his visit, he pledged to construct a 500-student capacity building at Mandera Teachers’ Training College under the affordable housing program.

Security operations have since been heightened in Mandera, with authorities on high alert for potential threats.
