President William Ruto on Tuesday received the official report on the recruitment of nominees for the positions of Chairperson and Commissioners of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), marking a key step in the reconstitution of the electoral body.

The report was presented to the Head of State by the IEBC Selection Panel, chaired by Dr. Nelson Makanda, during a brief ceremony held at State House, Nairobi.

In a statement issued shortly after the handover, President Ruto commended the panel for what he termed “diligent and commendable work” in undertaking the selection process.

He reiterated his administration’s commitment to upholding the Constitution and ensuring a transparent and accountable electoral system.

“This morning, I received the report on the recruitment of nominees for the positions of Chairperson and Members of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) from the IEBC Selection Panel, State House Nairobi. I commend the panel, chaired by Dr Nelson Makanda, for their diligent and commendable work.” Ruto said.

“In accordance with the provisions of the IEBC Act, I will nominate and transmit the names to the National Assembly in full fidelity to the constitutional principles that guide our system of governance,” the President affirmed.

The reconstitution of the IEBC comes at a critical time, with growing calls from various stakeholders for timely reforms ahead of future electoral cycles.

The commission has been operating with vacancies since the departure of several commissioners in the wake of the contentious 2022 general election.

The names of the nominees will now be subjected to parliamentary vetting before formal appointment. The outcome is expected to set the tone for public confidence in the country’s electoral infrastructure.
