President William Ruto has reaffirmed Kenya’s commitment to maintaining its status as a global athletics powerhouse while addressing challenges such as doping and gender-based violence in sports.
Speaking after a meeting with World Athletics President Lord Sebastian Coe at State House, Nairobi, President Ruto emphasized the government’s efforts to collaborate with national and international bodies to uphold integrity in athletics.
“Kenya’s rich sporting history, particularly in track and field, has made us a global athletics powerhouse. We continue to work with national and international bodies to address challenges such as doping and gender-based violence. Through sports, we are also driving climate action,” Ruto stated.
The discussions focused on Kenya’s strategy to enhance anti-doping measures, protect athletes from exploitation, and promote sustainable sporting initiatives. Kenya has faced scrutiny over doping cases in recent years, prompting the government to implement stricter regulations and athlete education programs.
Additionally, President Ruto highlighted how sports can contribute to climate action, a growing concern globally. Initiatives such as afforestation programs involving athletes and sustainable stadium development were discussed as part of Kenya’s broader agenda.
Lord Sebastian Coe commended Kenya’s commitment to clean and fair athletics, pledging continued support from World Athletics in ensuring the country remains a dominant force in track and field.
