Women vendors in Malindi town, Kilifi County, have received crucial support to help improve their businesses, courtesy of an initiative led by Malindi MP Amina Munyazi. The aid aims to provide essential resources to local vendors, particularly those selling “mnazi,” a traditional drink made from coconut sap.
At an event in Mbuzi Wengi, Amina Munyazi encouraged women to form groups, enabling them to access government grants and loans that would help them start and grow their businesses. This initiative is part of a broader effort to empower women economically, offering them the necessary tools to thrive.
Over 100 members of the Malindi Manzi Sellers Women Group were given market umbrellas designed to protect them from harsh weather conditions as they continue their work. Along with the umbrellas, the women were also provided with Ksh 100,000, which will serve as a rotational loan fund to help sustain and expand their businesses.
Many of these women operate their businesses along roadsides and in public spaces, leaving them exposed to the elements. “These hardworking mothers endure challenging conditions while trying to make a living. It was important to support them with umbrellas for protection,” said MP Amina Munyazi.
The recipients expressed their gratitude for the assistance, emphasizing how the support would make a significant impact on their businesses. “We are businesswomen who spend long hours under the scorching sun. We are truly thankful to Amina Munyazi for blessing us with umbrellas to protect ourselves,” said Loyce Dama, one of the vendors.
The challenges posed by the high cost of living were also acknowledged. Gladys Karembo, another vendor, shared that the financial support of Ksh 100,000 would be instrumental in helping them sustain their businesses. “The high cost of living has made it difficult to run our businesses, but we are grateful for the Ksh 100,000, which will help sustain us,” she said.
Elizabeth Muthoka, a local resident, also commended the MP for her compassionate actions. “Many women vendors suffer during both rainy and sunny seasons due to a lack of shade. I thank Hon. Amina Munyazi for listening to our cries and offering help,” she said.
Sheila Ward, MCA of Twahir, also attended the event and praised Munyazi’s leadership. “This is the kind of leadership we expect and need in Malindi—leaders who listen to and act on the needs of the people,” Ward remarked.
Through this initiative, Amina Munyazi has not only provided practical support to these women but also set an example of leadership that prioritizes the welfare and economic empowerment of the community.
