The 2027 elections are shaping up to be one of Kenya’s most anticipated political contests, with major figures positioning themselves .

President William Ruto, opposition leader Raila Odinga, Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, and embattled Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua—positioned to headline the race.

Political analysts predict an intense power struggle, with alliances, impeachments, and rivalries setting the stage for a transformative election cycle.

Recent collaboration between President Ruto and Raila has fueled speculation about a political strategy that could marginalize other contenders.

However, Deputy President Gachagua, whose impeachment motion looms, could complicate these alliances.

“The impeachment push has brought Ruto and Raila closer, but this partnership could backfire, as it risks alienating sections of Mount Kenya supporters loyal to Gachagua,” says political analyst Albert Kasembeli.

Kasembeli suggests that Gachagua’s impeachment could weaken Ruto’s hold on the Mount Kenya region if Gachagua capitalizes on any perceived betrayal to rally local support.

“This scenario presents Kalonzo Musyoka with a potential advantage. If Gachagua positions himself as the protector of Mount Kenya interests, Kalonzo might secure additional support from disaffected voters,” he added.

Other analysts highlight that Kalonzo’s consistent opposition to Ruto may now position him as a key beneficiary of the unfolding rift within Kenya Kwanza.

“As Ruto and Raila collaborate, Kalonzo can tap into the resulting distrust in Mount Kenya, along with potential Rift Valley dissatisfaction,” says political analyst Martin Mwaura.

“He has a golden opportunity to align himself with other leaders feeling alienated by the Ruto-Raila alignment.” he said.

As the political landscape heats up, the alliances and fallout from the Gachagua impeachment could very well determine the direction of the 2027 elections.

Observers expect that Ruto’s efforts to hold a coalition together may be tested, while Raila, by joining forces with Ruto, risks compromising his traditional opposition base.

With the stakes this high, the 2027 elections promise an unparalleled political spectacle in Kenya, with shifting loyalties and potential surprise alliances at every turn.
