President William Ruto has assured that he will be the leader to implement a range of progressive development projects to not only lead the economic but also the social growth of Ukambani region.
The President while addressing the Mashujaa Day celebration at Ithookwe Stadium in Kitui, said that he was looking forward to a comprehensive working tour of the locality in two weeks’ time to gather first-hand information about the execution of the projects.
The head of state encouraged the people of Ukambani to keep on supporting each other and stigmatize the practice of divisive politics which according to him has been the major cause of stagnation in the region for many years.
Decision-makers who still exploit partisan politics to gain power at the detriment of development were, however, scorned by him as he appealed to them to consider the people’s welfare before anything else.
Among the measures, President Ruto committed to is the deployment of 50 mega water projects throughout the regional to accomplish over 2 million acres of land irrigation. According to the President, this step would greatly expand food security and provide a chance for the common citizens to earn a livelihood by the thousands.
He has also promised to reverse the slow progress of various stages of infrastructural works notably the Thwake Dam, which is envisioned as a major source of water and power for the Lower Eastern part of the country, by speeding up the construction procedures.
The President also directed the relevant government departments and ministries to speed up the road and bridge rehabilitation works that are aimed at improving the movement of people and goods within and outside Ukambani.
Furthermore, Ruto made public the rural electrification scheme that aimed to provide power to 16,000 homes in Kitui County. The undertaking whose cost is estimated at KSh 2.2 billion is geared towards giving people access to electricity as well as facilitating the growth of small enterprises.
