President William Ruto has officially broken ground for the construction of the KenGen-Kaishan Olkaria Green Fertiliser Plant in Nakuru County, marking what he described as a defining moment in Kenya’s green industrial transformation.

The KSh100 billion venture, a collaboration between Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) and China’s Kaishan Group, is set to produce more than 480,000 tonnes of fertiliser annually — a major step toward reducing Kenya’s reliance on imported agricultural inputs.

“The KSh100 billion Olkaria project is a powerful symbol of what happens when energy, technology, and vision unite in purpose. It will produce more than 480,000 tonnes of fertiliser annually, ensuring our farmers have a reliable, affordable, and locally produced supply,” President Ruto said during the groundbreaking ceremony.

According to the President, the plant will provide farmers with a reliable, affordable, and locally produced fertiliser supply while boosting national productivity and food security.

Beyond agriculture, the facility is expected to create over 2,000 jobs and cut the country’s fertiliser import bill by more than KSh60 billion each year.

Ruto noted that the Olkaria Green Fertiliser Plant is a “powerful symbol of what happens when energy, technology, and vision unite in purpose,” emphasizing that the initiative reinforces Kenya’s leadership in green growth and climate-smart innovation across the continent.

The project is part of the government’s broader agenda to promote clean energy-driven industries and position Kenya as a hub for sustainable, low-carbon manufacturing in Africa.
