President William Ruto has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to unlocking the economic potential of Lake Victoria through strategic investments in fisheries, aquaculture, tourism, and transport.

Speaking during the launch of the construction of the Muhuru Bay Pier in Nyatike on Monday, the President said the project is part of a broader effort to spur regional development, create jobs, and combat poverty.

“We are harnessing Lake Victoria’s huge potential—including fisheries, aquaculture, tourism and transportation—to spur growth, create jobs and reduce poverty,” said President Ruto.

The Muhuru Bay Pier, once completed, is expected to reduce post-harvest losses in the fishing sector and increase the incomes of local fishers and traders by improving storage and transport systems.

President Ruto said the government is prioritizing the blue economy as a sustainable growth frontier, especially for communities living along Lake Victoria.

“By investing in modern infrastructure like this pier, we are empowering local communities to benefit from their natural resources and build resilient livelihoods.”

He added that similar interventions are being planned across other counties bordering the lake, as part of a long-term development blueprint for the Lake Region Economic Bloc.

The President urged local leaders and residents to work closely with national government agencies to ensure the success and sustainability of the project.
