President William Ruto has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to unlocking the economic potential of Lake Victoria as he embarked on the second day of his development tour in Migori County.
Speaking in Nyatike constituency, the Head of State launched the construction of the Muhuru Bay Pier, a key infrastructure project aimed at enhancing the fisheries and aquaculture sectors.
The pier is expected to significantly reduce post-harvest losses and improve earnings for local fishermen and traders.“We are harnessing Lake Victoria’s huge potential — including fisheries, aquaculture, tourism, and transportation — to spur growth, create jobs, and reduce poverty,” President Ruto said.
The President emphasized that the pier will not only provide safer docking and fish handling facilities but also open up new opportunities for value addition and export. The project is part of a broader strategy to revamp Kenya’s blue economy and improve livelihoods in lakeside counties.
Local leaders and residents welcomed the project, citing the challenges fishermen face due to lack of proper infrastructure, which often leads to fish spoilage and income losses.
The visit to Migori is part of President Ruto’s ongoing tour of Nyanza and Western Kenya aimed at launching development projects and engaging with grassroots communities on government service delivery.
