President William Ruto has explained the National Government and Nairobi County collaboration agreement worth Sh80 billion, stating that it will break up cartels that have been blamed for inefficiency of the capital for many years.
Addressing Nairobi County Assembly on Thursday, President Ruto said the deal was going after deep-rooted networks that are siphoning public resources through exploitation of service delivery weaknesses.
He also mentioned that the agencies responsible for investigations have been given the task of looking for individuals behind the cartels and making sure they are held accountable.
Ruto, the first sitting president to address the Assembly, said the partnership, which was signed earlier this year, will make operations more efficient and improve service delivery in major sectors namely street lighting, water and sanitation, roads, and waste management.
“We are delivering a safer city through the installation of 50,000 street lighting points, including the revival of 40,000 existing
lights and the installation of 10,000 new solar and smart streetlights. Fabrication is already underway.”
The President also disclosed that a Nairobi Metropolitan Police Unit will be created to address insecurity in crime-prone areas which will lead to an increase in safety for residents and businesses. He gave assurance that residents of Nairobi will see real changes beginning from the end of May as implementation becomes more active.
The President cautioned a section of politicians who were inciting traders at Gikomba Market to resist relocation by the government, warning that the government will continue with its development agenda including the construction of a modern market.
