Kenyan gospel singer Ringtone Apoko has thrown his full support behind the government’s new move to ban celebrities and influencers from promoting gambling advertisements. The decision, which comes from the Betting Control and Licensing Board (BCLB), is part of a wider effort to limit the growing influence of gambling, particularly on young people. By stopping public figures from endorsing betting platforms, the government hopes to reduce the glamorisation of gambling in the eyes of the youth.
Ringtone, who is well known for being vocal about social issues, welcomed the directive and stressed the harm that celebrity-backed gambling promotions can cause. According to him, such advertisements send the wrong message to impressionable fans, making them believe that gambling is an easy road to success, when in reality, it can lead to addiction, financial trouble, and ruined lives.
The BCLB’s ban goes beyond just stopping celebrity endorsements. It also introduces stricter controls around how gambling ads are produced and shown. All adverts must now receive approval from both the BCLB and the Kenya Film Classification Board before they can go public. Additionally, these ads are banned from appearing near schools and religious sites, and they must include messages encouraging responsible gambling.
Despite criticism from some influencers who feel the ban will negatively affect their earnings and was introduced without proper consultation, Ringtone maintains that safeguarding young people is far more important than profits. He is urging fellow celebrities to reflect on the social consequences of their endorsements and to prioritise the wellbeing of their followers over financial gain. His stance adds to the broader national conversation on the role of public figures in promoting products and the ethical responsibilities that come with influence.
