Kenyan artist Remcy Don has stirred up controversy on social media after going public with a statement that he is looking for a lookalike of Rekless, the famous Gengetone star from Ethic Entertainment. In a bold Facebook rant, Remcy expressed his frustration, claiming Rekless demanded Ksh 200,000 to post their track a price he is willing to pay, just not to Rekless.
”Nitakulipa ile 200K alikuwa anataka! Ajue pesa sio shida, lakini kuna vile inafaa kuombwa,” Remcy wrote, explaining that the issue isn’t money, but how the business was transacted. He added that even someone with no followers is welcome as long as they resemble Rekless and are willing to work on the project.
This public breakdown points to deeper issues within the Kenyan music scene, particularly among Gengetone artists who have been accused for years of inconsistency, poor branding, and bloated egos. Rekless, born Brian Oduor, achieved massive success with Ethic with hits like Lamba Lolo and Figa but has been quiet in recent months.
Remcy Don’s decision to go around the original artist and find a look-alike for a song release is unconventional. It seems there’s growing frustration among artists and producers who are fed up with industry politics getting in the way.
