The Raila Odinga Stadium in Homa Bay is officially ready to host the 2025 Madaraka Day celebrations, following a successful handover to the National Celebrations Steering Committee on Monday.

The 12,000-seater stadium has undergone extensive renovations, transforming it into a modern, multi-purpose venue that meets national standards for major events and sporting competitions.

The ceremonial handover was led by Homa Bay Governor, who was joined by a delegation of senior national and county leaders.

Among those in attendance were Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affairs, Creative Economy, and Sports Salim Mvurya, Cabinet Secretary for Petroleum and Energy Opiyo Wandayi, Members of Parliament from Homa Bay County, Principal Secretaries, and officials from Sports Kenya.

In his remarks, the Governor hailed the stadium as a major step forward in regional development. “The Raila Odinga Stadium is not just a venue—it’s a symbol of our commitment to nurturing talent and developing sports infrastructure in the region,” he said. “We are proud to hand over a facility that reflects our collective vision for progress and national pride.”

The upgraded facility is expected to boost local economic activity, promote youth engagement in sports, and position Homa Bay as a key host for national and regional events.

Officials lauded the quality of work done and emphasized the importance of maintaining the stadium for long-term community use beyond the Madaraka Day celebrations.

With the preparations complete, Homa Bay now stands ready to welcome thousands of Kenyans on June 1st, marking a historic moment for the county as it hosts the national celebration for the first time.
